WV Musings and a Saturday Seminar

It has been interesting reading the news today. Here are a few topics you may want to discuss with your teens.

Miss California has been lambasted for saying, “We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”  Her comments have stirred up much discussion on the internet.  http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/04/perez-hilton-on.html

And just when you were wondering what has happened to cause so many aborted downs syndrome babies … here’s the answer: “…90% of Downs syndrome fetuses are aborted. Maybe some of these abortions wouldn’t happen if we backed women up in caring for special needs children. If conservatives hadn’t stripped our society of the social insurance that would help families raise children, there might BE fewer abortions…”  See there, it’s the conservatives’ fault for stripping our society of social insurance.  http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dot.comments/2009/04/sarah_palin_and_choice.html

In another blog Barna is criticized for proposing a definition of “Biblical worldview” so narrowly that 99% of the population is excluded.  The blogger notes, “This is the first generation to grow up almost completely wired.  They’re knowledgeable about the realities of the way the world works.  They’re not narrowly defined because Nike and every fashion label has taught them to search for the always changing, next big thing.  They refused to be defined by us.  Yes they may be cynical but they also have learned to live in the shadow of tension. They’ve learned to hold the paradox of the both/and.  They’ve learned a right answer is silly because nobody lives it.  We’re all broken.  And we don’t like that do we?  We don’t like that Mosaics can live in the paradox of the not knowing.  They can hold two opposing views simultaneously.”  I’m not real sure why this author is so bothered by the classification suggested by Barna.  By the way, according to Barna, this generation is “very mosaic in every aspect of their life.” He continues,”There’s no attribute that really dominates like you might have seen with prior generations.” Barna also describes this group as “comfortable with contradiction”, “post-modern” and exhibiting “non-linear” thinking What do you think?  http://jonathanbrink.com/2009/04/20/a-biblical-worldview/

After finally receiving the move “Come What May” (I’m assuming it was back ordered) I watched it last night.  I’ll post a review soon.  In some ways the movie did not meet my expectations yet in other ways I was pleasantly surprised.  Have you watched it?  http://www.comewhatmaythemovie.com/

If you live near Orlando, plan to join us this Saturday!

I have watched “Come What May” a while ago when it was free to view online. While I think it was a great movie for Christian conservatives, there are a few things that may turn off anyone who doesn’t agree with our standards/views…within the first 30 minutes. I thought it made some great points about when the unborn “technically ” attain life…but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.

I am so supportive of Miss California’s answer to her question. I flipped the pageant on in the middle of the swimsuit competition, and didn’t think that was a good time to let my 13yos watch, so I turned on something different, but do I ever wish I had flipped back a little later. I found it on YouTube the next morning. I thought she gave a very courteous and honest answer. She was asked for her opinion, knowing the question was meant to be political and divisive…or at least meaning to make the panel member who asked it feel support and validity for his own lifestyle. I was appalled at how he responded to her opinion (which he asked…”what do you think…”) in a later video blog. Apparently, if you give your own opinion in a sweet, courteous manner, and it opposes any one single person, then you are a “bigot,” but if you get angry and call someone sweet and courteous a vile name, you are just speaking your mind and people should be OK with that. I was not only glad that she gave an honest answer, although it may have cost her the crown, and also stood by it afterward, but also that, being from California, she is much more aware that she could face backlash and possibly death threats or threats of violence as others who vocally opposed Prop 8…maybe even her title as Miss California….and she still did it anyway. I commend her for her honesty and courage. (…even if she did generalize “where” same-sex marriage is legal. I’m sure she was very nervous.) As far as the booing that has been alleged (and I’m sure it happened), I couldn’t hear it over the applause and cheering from the rest of the audience. Maybe it was just my internet connection…or maybe it was that the majority of the people in this country agree with her and that was their “free expression of speech.” :-)

    Way to go Miss California!!!
I just watched the you-tube videos of all this and saw the one on Perez Hilton on MSNBC. The interviewer said to him “I understand you apologized for your comments about Miss California after the pageant” then he says (paraphrased) “I did, but you know what, after thinking about it I don’t apologize. I stand by what I called her. I called her the “B” word I also wanted to call her the “C” word”
(I am not sure what the “c” word would have been). He also said she was in the top 2 and that it certainly cost her the crown. If it would have been even a little bit more of a conservative judge it would not have mattered. Shameful!!!! The shape of things to come…
